11 films guaranteed to soothe your New Year's hangover

Beige food for your brain.

AT A LOOSE END on this New Year’s Day? Feeling a little fragile? You’ll probably be looking for the perfect film to soothe your weary soul, right?

There are a few things to keep in mind – it can’t be too gory (you’re too fragile for that), it can’t be too emotional (again, much too fragile), length isn’t a problem (you’re not planning on moving much) and the less thinking you have to do, the better.

We have compiled a short list of films we think fit the criteria above. Stick one of these on, sit back and forget everything.

First Wives’ Club

This film has everything – Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, friendship, revenge, glamour, and a seemingly random musical segment.

It’s light, it’s frothy, it’s perfect for hungover viewing.

The Shawshank Redemption

A film that anyone can enjoy, whether you’re watching in your parents’ living room or amongst the debris from your New Year’s Eve party.

Zoolander

Allow your zombie-fied self to relate to brainless Derek Zoolander, and enjoy a few gentle giggles along the way.

The Lord of the Rings

Admittedly, you can’t just ‘stick on’ the Lord of the Rings. But if you really aren’t planning on doing anything but wallowing for the day, LOTR (and especially the Fellowship of the Ring) is your man.

The Harry Potter series

On the other end of the spectrum, you can dip in and out of any of the Harry Potter films at will. We recommend the beautifully shot Prisoner of Azkaban and the action-packed Deathly Hallows Part 2 in particular.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy

Nolan’s Batman films look smart, but the combined plots have more holes than a colander. Though who cares when you’re in a heap, really?

Finding Nemo/Monsters, Inc

When choosing a Disney film to watch while hungover, you must tread carefully.

The Lion King and Up seem like good options, but be warned: you might not be able to handle the feels. Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc are pretty safe bets.

Die Hard

Die Hard is appropriate for any time of year, but at Christmas it comes into its own. If you’re delicate but still can’t abide anything too light and fluffy, this is for you.

Pride and Prejudice

Period dramas about taciturn gentlemen and the witty young ladies who love them are perfect hungover movie fodder.

Space Jam/Back to the Future/Jurassic Park

Pick your childhood decade. Pick a suitably nostalgic film from said decade. Go. Be at peace.

Anything by director Richard Curtis

Sliding Doors, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral (or Love Actually if you’re still feeling festive) – if you want something soppy, you can’t go wrong with Curtis.
